Five Tips to Create Your Best LinkedIn Profile

I was speaking to a client the other day and she asked me why she needed to keep up her LinkedIn profile or connections when she’s perfectly happy in the job she has found.  I asked her if she only spoke to other professionals when she was looking job hunting.

Equivalent to exchanging business cards at meetings LinkedIn is the source for keeping and growing your network of professional contacts. Even if attending professional association meetings in person isn’t always possible, you can stay current with colleagues and peers in real-time.   Keeping current with those you want in your network has never been easier than it is through active management of your LinkedIn account.  Yet, what if your profile isn’t attracting the attention it deserves from other professionals?

  1. Profile Photo: Profiles with headshots garner 14 times the views than those without a picture. A great profile photo is one that shows that you’re confident and successful, so skip the selfies or family photo and invest in a high-quality headshot using soft lighting and neutral backgrounds with colors and clothing that are in sync with your personal brand and target roles.
  2. Headline: The first thing people see when they view your profile is your headline, so use it well. Be original and descriptive, helping people to understand who you are and what you do. Incorporate your goals and ambitions, shifting the focus to the future rather than jut a list of your past accomplishments. And keep your headline under 120 characters, avoiding taglines such as “actively seeking opportunities” that may make you seem desperate.
  3. Edit & Refine: Proofread vigilantly for typos, keep punctuation and capitalization consistent, update contact and location information as it changes, add in new responsibilities, promotions, and awards as they occur, and delete jargon and buzzwords that don’t really say anything. Also, remove irrelevant information, such as unused social media accounts, and only list skills that are relevant to your current search.
  4. Customize Your URL: Every LinkedIn member is assigned a URL when they join. Long and impersonal, these links can be edited to reflect your personal brand while making it easier send people your profile and to find you via Google or Bing. Consider using your first and last name, and if already taken, add a middle initial or a combination of initials, or even your industry. Once you’ve customized your link be sure to add it to your resume and/or email signature.
  5. Recommendations/Endorsements: Even when not job-searching, endorsements lend greater credibility to your professional status. Don’t be shy about asking previous or current employers and co-workers for recommendations. Make it easy for your professional network or future employers to scroll through your profile and see that you’re a hard worker and colleagues are willing to endorse you publicly. Testimonials are similar to restaurant reviews, so the goal is to have endorsements for the most significant parts of your career experience.

Once you’ve updated your profile, regularly set aside time to hone and polish your information, ensuring its readable, mistake-free, relevant, and current. Also, stay active on the site, posting information and comments while liking others’ contributions—activity raises your score in LinkedIn algorithmic search results.
